Great Saw and pruner

Trail Blazer XTD 14FE Xtend A Pruner

Trail Blazer XTD 14FE Xtend A Pruner

I've owned several extendable hook pruners over the years and they all have had pretty much the same list of faults, centered around the slipping, rotating and excessive flexibility of the fiberglass pole when it's extended.

Well Hallelujah, somebody has finally seen the light! Thank you, Trail Blazer. The XTD-14FE has the industry standard fiberglass outer tube, but the inner tube is aluminum, and quite stiff. But wait, there's more. The aluminum inner tube has flats formed on both sides that index with the outer tube, so no rotation. The aluminum inner tube also has 1/4" dia holes spaced at 6" intervals the entire length of the tube that are engaged by a simple thumb operated spring-loaded pin. It's a positive pin lock with absolutely zero slippage, absolutely always. No more collet nut that usually has to be loosened with pliers (and still slips), simply press a button with your thumb to adjust the length of the pole. A positive stop at maximum extension prevents the inner tube from being accidentally pulled out of the outer tube.

The cutter head has double-sheave 5-part rigging that provides a long, easy pull to cut even the largest oak branches that will go into the throat of the cutter. There's a man-size rubber handle on the end of the braided nylon pull-rope. The pull-rope runs through an idler pulley that takes it closely down the pole, so no tangling with brush. The saw can be installed and removed without tools and is reversible when not required so it's out of the way, but still right there if you need it. The people who engineered the XTD-14FE obviously have some real-world experience. It's made in Canada.

If you need an extended-pole hook pruner I highly recommend the Trail Blazer XTD-14FE. You won't be disappointed.

  1. Once I received this trimmer I could not wait to try it out .It cut thru branches like hot butter. I trimmed the whole yard about five trees in less then an hour. Pole is made of fiberglass and is non conductive.Great for trimming near phone and cable wires.

  2. I really like this pruner it is very light weight easy to use and cuts with no effort. It doesn't bind up,it really cuts nice with that pulley system.Be careful with the saw it is very and sharp works great. The 12' extension is perfect for this type of pruner it doesn't bend as much as the 14'/ 16' pruners.

  4. Just got this to replace the 20 year old pole saw to cut shooting lanes for the deer stands. Very pleased with the performance and durability. Nice and lightweight and stayed pretty rigid even at full length. The saw is very sharp and the pruner cuts like a hot knife through butter. 100% satisfied

  6. I recently bought the Trail Blazer XTD-14FE Xtend A Pruner and have used it to top some Leland Cypress trees. It has several great features! The positive action pin stops for the extension are great, one does not have to worry about slippage. Even big branches are easy to cut with the compound action on the pruning knife. I also like the extra pulley which keeps the cord near the pole and hence is less likely to be tangled up in branches. The saw is very sharp and easy to put on and off.

  7. Just got this pruner from Amzn for $60 Oct 2011 tried it right away to cut out small branches in my trees that hve been taken over by mistletoe...both the saw and the pruner work very good...made in Canada, seems built very good...seems like a good value to me...only time will tell on the quality of the steel in the saw and pruner blades

  8. This is absolutely the best extension Pruner I've ever owned. The mechanism extends easily, remains rigid even at full length, and does not twist in use. The curved blade cuts easily and the pulley system provides substantial mechanical advantage to the looper. Further, working with customer service at Trail Blazer to buy replacement parts has been a joy.
