Dorman 600 600 4WD Wire Harness

Dorman 600 600 4WD Wire Harness

Use this wiring harness with the 600-101 actuator to update your 95-2000 chevy truck to the newer style front axle shifter. The new 600-101 actuator shifts in a few seconds rather than waiting while the old thermal actuator struggles to shift. Here is a tip from another reviewer that I used also. You can easily connect the third brown wire (power source) to a terminal block located INSIDE your vehicle. It is down low by the parking brake pedal. Look for the lower middle terminal called DRK GRN. The middle wire of the three located on the DRK GRN male connector is powered from the 4 wheel drive circuit, which is the one you want. I drilled a small hole in the driver's side firewall, and then ran the wire along other wires on the driver's side and then around the front of the engine (in the red battery wire channel over the radiator) to the passenger side, along the frame which is where this wiring harness comes off the front axle. Use Dorman Gold plated Female disconnects part # 84547, 16-14 gauge to connect this wire to the terminal block inside the vehicle. These #84547 disconnects will fit on the middle spade of the DRK GRN plug at the bottom by the parking brake. Good luck and enjoy much faster/easier shifting into 4WD!

  2. I have a 1996 Silverado K1500. I had enough of how long it was taking for the thermal actuator to engage my front axle so I decided to order the Dorman 600-101 actuator along with this wire harness kit. For me it was well worth the cost because it made everything so much easier when compared to trying to source all the necessary individual parts and assembling them into a harness. The kit also includes a steel spacer that is necessary for the Dorman 600-101 to work with older style trucks like mine.

The harness seems like it is of good quality and was easy to install except for when it came time to splice the brown wire into my truck's wiring harness. The instructions are clear enough at telling you what to do, but I had some difficulty locating the proper wire because the instructions don't provide any pictures of what you're looking for - just several wiring diagrams. You are looking for a particular connector with a brown (BRN) wire. Yes, the wire is brown but only in an academic sense. In reality the wire simply isn't as dark as the black wire next to it.

Eventually, I did locate what I thought was the proper wire. The next problem was separating it from the rest of the truck's wiring harness so I could splice into it. Using the method I've honed with many years of experience (persistence and a lot of curse words) I eventually got the wire spliced. After going through all that frustration I was even more pleased that I ordered this harness instead of making my own since I didn't have the added frustration.

(Note: I took some pictures of where the BRN wire is located on my truck and posted them here on Amazon to help anybody else contemplating this project.)

  3. Used this harness in conjunction with the Dorman 600-100 actuator. Installed both in an older K1500 that previously had the thermal actuator. Made engagement much quicker. Also wired the power lead of the harness through a switch, so that I can engage the transfer case into Lo, but not allow power to the actuator. Gives me the option of 2wd Lo. Nice bonus.

  4. The product is just wires, connectors and wire loom. Also a spacer to allow the 600-101 actuator to replace the older, thermal actuators. There is an added layer of foil for where it may need to be routed near the exhaust. Basically, it is two connectors to plug in between your existing harness and a new Dorman 600-101 motor type axle actuator. This is to replace the original thermal type actuator. The other connection required is a splice into your existing harness to power the actuator when shifting into 4 wheel drive. Nothing wrong with the product, but the instructions are a little hard to follow. To be fair, Dorman had to cover several year models with various combinations of factory wiring methods into one set of instructions, and they probably did as well as could be expected. There are 9 pages of instructions and diagrams. Once you figure out which wiring diagram to use, the real problem is access to the splice location suggested by Dorman. Most seem to be under the truck, and in almost inaccessible areas. Once I saw how hard it would be to do a successful splice under the truck, I decided to do it inside instead. Making the splice inside eliminates any problems later from moisture. The wire in this harness to be spliced is plenty long to reach from the right side of the truck (where it connects to the actuator and truck harness), over the transmission and through an existing hole in the firewall (between the throttle cable and brake booster). NOTE: I was installing this on a 1993 Blazer. I then spliced into the specified circuit at the convenience center under the dash. All this can be seen in the wiring diagrams provided in the instructions. Just remember, it doesn't matter where you splice into the wire, just so it is the right wire.
This harness, together with the 600-101 actuator is a great upgrade to any GM truck with the old, problematic thermal actuator. There IS a reason GM switched to a motor driven actuator, and with this harness, and a new actuator, you can too.

  5. I mounted dorman 600-101 and harness upgrade and it works great. I drive 92 silverado, the wiring is mounted inside on floor going to transfercase switch. Thanks.
