Kensun Conversion Colors Premium Ballasts

Being a professional high end automotive detailer, I claim I have some experience driving plenty of high end automobiles at night, most of them with excellent HID systems. Years ago, I desparately wanted HID lighting for my 2004 highlander due to the outstanding performance of HID. However the option didnt exist, and aftermaket kits at the time literally cost around $1000. I thought that was ridiculous, and continued to replace the Higlanders bulbs with good quality HELLA aftermarket bulbs. However, longevity was always an issue, and at $40 a set, it added up quick. The last time the bulb failed, I thought I would check again to see if the prices were any more reasonable. I was shocked to see the Kensun kits for less than $100. To say I was sceptical was an huge understatement. I stuck with the 6000K intensity because it was the "whitest" of the lights and not too blue, which I didnt want. I also forgot to mention I own a 2004 Lexus with factory HID and the Highlanders lights are not just as good. They literally rival any factory installed HID lighting installed before 2010. Not only were the easy to install, the performance is flawless. However, the price, makes them an absolute steal. Real legitimate HID lighting to replace the poor yellow factory lighting for under $100 bucks. Amazing. I don't know how they do it, but I suggest you purchase a set now before someone figures out this must be a mistake! Outstanding value for the money. Highly recommended without hesitation.

  2. After reading several reviews, I decided to make the leap into H.I.D. headlights with the Kensun conversion kit. I have a Tundra, and I have been running 100W halogen lights to get better visibility at night. The 100W halogens ended up baking my sockets and the wiring to my headlights... So, since I was going to have to work on it anyway, I decided to finally get some H.I.D. bulbs.

The kit was very simple to install, not much in the way of directions but really it was very adequate. They are dead simple to install, I could have done it in 15 minutes or so if it weren't for a couple of things that are specific to my Tundra. The truck came with shields for the stock bulbs, and these light ran into them. They were a bit of a hassle to get out, since the headlight assembly is completely glued tight and they are a little bigger than the hole for the bulb to go through. I also had to spend a few minutes figuring out how to put the stock rubber boot on over these bulbs. The bulbs had a twist lock bayonet style mount to lock the bulb to the big part in back for the high beam, and I had to work the boot on but it's all good now.

The lights didn't work at first, and I spent a few minutes figuring out what was wrong. The directions said to reverse the polarity, but it could have been more clear if they had said to reverse the polarity where the harness plugs into the ballast. The ballast are marked "+" and "-" right on the plug housing... But I put a volt meter on the harness and there was no power coming out of it. Then I ran jumpers to the ballasts directly, and both lights lit up. It turned out that the relay assembly (What they call a "Control Box" in the directions) was not working at all. I called the number at their web site, [...]. I left a message since they are closed on Friday and Saturday.

They called back and got my amazon order number and said they'd ship me a replacement. I told them I would need the wiring harness too, since I needed to have headlights in my truck and I cut the harness to wire in a Bosch relay so I would have low beams at least. They said no problem.

A couple of days later the new harness/relay arrived, and I swapped it out. Honestly, though, I don't know if I really needed the HID high beams... (Several reviewers said to be sure you ordered the bi-xenon kit with HID low and high beams.) These lights are so bright on low beam it borders on ridiculous! They look like they put out more than three times the light of the 100W halogen bulbs... If I bend over and look right into the headlights from 20 feet in front of the truck I am temporarily blind for 20 or 30 seconds... These things are freaking bright!

When you flip the high beams, it's instantaneous... I was wondering if there might be a slight delay, because they actually actuate a solenoid type of assembly in the back of the bulb to reposition the bulb. No delay at all... And on high beam my truck lights up the street all the way down to the end of the block... I'll probably not use the high beams much, but when I'm driving up in the mountains at night, it will be really, really nice to have these things.

When they fire up, you can hear a slight buzzing from the ballasts when you are standing next to the truck with the hood up and the engine not running, but there is absolutely no electrical noise. I have the Toyota high end stereo for the truck, and also a satellite XM radio, and an Ipod connector... No interference at all with the stereo system.

I am planning on replacing the headlights in two more cars with these. I don't know how I went so long without putting in the HID bulbs, but now I am a huge fan! I just have to do it when my wife is not around, so I don't get yelled at... :-) (She has great night vision, and she doesn't see why I wanted brighter headlights... )

  4. Like the title says.. Kensun is really Awesun (awesome).

It does help that I'm an electrical engineer so the install even though I'm a amateur went super smooth. The install took me about 1 hour. I did some reading online and saw some youtube installs to make life easier. Some install pointers:

    1. Do it when your fresh, like sometime in the morning. There's plenty of light and your ready to tackle a project.
    2. Keep tools handy. Lots of zip ties. Wrench in case you have to remove your car battery (I had to).
    3. Keep some paper towels around cause your hands are definitely going to get dirty. If your not careful about keeping your fingers away from the glass of the bulb, keep some rubber gloves around too. So that when you install the bulb portion, use the gloves so all the dirt / oil from your fingers won't smudge the bulb.
    4. Install the bulbs first. You will need all the clearance you can get to install the bulbs carefully, so I suggest doing that first once you have removed the battery etc. There might be a case where the install of the ballast blocks you from installing the bulb easily.

From all the installs that I had read online, I remember seeing wiring diagrams that needed you to install wires to the battery etc. Nothing complicated like that in this kit. This kit was a 35W super simple install. The ballast had 2 wires, one that hooked into the original wiring of the car and the other to the HID bulb. The bulb also had a parallel wire that acted as a extension in case the original car wire was not long enough, in my case I needed to use the extension. I figured out the wire parallel to the bulb wire was an extension by looking at it really closely. I did not see that information in the directions included.
The wiring diagram title was "Wiring Diagram II", almost indicating there was a part I. Actually the diagram was the correct one for the kit included, just a bit confusing I guess.

Lastly, check the +ve and -ve connections thoroughly. My install was smooth (it worked perfectly when I started it up), I had to re-install the battery and you wouldn't want things to malfunction after putting the battery back since its heavy to remove. You will be bending your hands in positions that you have not done in a while so you will be a bit sore after your done with the install. Good Luck.

  5. dont be fooled by lower prices. this brand is the brand you want to by. i have a 1992 ford f150. i got 8k lights. nothing short of awesome. i just have low beams and they work awesome. they make all my Michigan sings light up very very bright. they ae safe also. can been seened form awhile away, but still dont blind drivers. will maybe.

One of my lights broke. i didnt have it in right and it melted. it still worked while it was melting, just i could tell bc it was making the lights go in wrong places. i contacted customer support ans they sent me a two new lights a new ballast for free. i olny asked for one new light. very happy.

best HID light out there. must by if you drive at night. can see deer and wildlife alot easier also, witch is a must in michigan.

  6. Awesome products. Installed it in my wife's Toyota Camry and it looks amazing. Took all about 15 minutes to install (I had done this in other cars) Suggest you read instructions on google. Instructions that some with this kit are generic. The connectors are fool proof and you really can't get it wrong.

  7. Had everything disassembled and installed and went to turn on and one of the red wires on the small connector was not attached. Was very disappointed but due to great reviews decided to return and order the same set. Will revise review once received next week and installed.

Update: 2nd set arrived, verified all connections were good and installed. Dramatic difference from stock halogen bulbs on my 2006 F250. Can actually see now. Would definately recommend - excellent product. Looking at the fog light conversion kit as well.

  8. The installation was about as simple as it could be. It really took no more time than just replacing a burned out bulb. The ballasts are small (deck of cards sized) and the housing is robust and appears well made. The bulbs strike immediately and warm up quickly. I also really like the color of the 6000k bulbs that came with it-- they're a nice crisp white as one should be able to expect with a 6000k bulb, not overly blue like some are (like the one I have on my bike, that's also 6000k, but too blue-- from another brand). I plan on getting another set for my fog lights.

Light output is much improved from the Silverstar Ultras I had in there. Glare doesn't seem to be much of a problem with my stock '04 Grand Prix headlight housings.
